The 6 Universal Red Flags

Every scam โ€” regardless of type, platform or country โ€” contains at least one of these six red flags. Learning them gives you a universal fraud detector.

1. Urgency

"You must act NOW or lose this opportunity." Scammers manufacture urgency to prevent you from thinking clearly or consulting others. Any legitimate opportunity will still be there tomorrow.

2. Secrecy

"Don't tell your family about this investment." Isolation is a control tactic. Legitimate financial opportunities do not require secrecy.

3. Upfront Payment

Any request for money before a promised service or return is delivered. "Pay a small fee to unlock your winnings" โ€” the winnings do not exist.

4. Unusual Payment Methods

Gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers to overseas accounts. These are untraceable and unrecoverable. Banks use reversible payment systems. Scammers never do.

5. Unsolicited Contact

You didn't reach out first. They found you. Whether via dating app, WhatsApp, LinkedIn or phone โ€” if they came to you with an opportunity, treat it as suspicious until proven otherwise.

6. Too Good to Be True

Guaranteed returns, risk-free investment, "exclusive" opportunities. Markets do not work this way. Nothing is guaranteed. Anyone promising otherwise is lying.

Key Takeaway

Any one of these 6 flags = stop and verify. Two or more = almost certainly a scam.
